History of Great Ideas

In the spring of 1980 the dream of opening Great Ideas was realized for owner Julie Rhora.  The store started in the front half of a local shoe store.  We quickly outgrew the space and moved to the main four corners of Tecumseh.  The business continues to grow so finding a larger location became a priority again.  At the time Julie was trying to help the local historical society find a place for the historic depot that needed to be moved.  In 1986 the depot was moved to the corner of Ottawa and Chicago Blvd. onto an empty lot.  Once the depot was restored, Great Ideas expanded again by moving into the depot and the adjacent brick building.  This helped the historical society with renovation expenses and gave Great Ideas a larger home.

Most of our clients at the time were local homeowners who were remodeling.  We began to see a change in the clients we serviced at the end of the 80s.  More and more new homes were being built and clients wanted our expertise in finishing them.  We became involved with the Ann Arbor Showcase of Homes, which increased our new home business.  In 2008 the market changed dramatically and clients began to remodel their existing homes instead of building new ones.  A retail based business needs to be ready to change with the market whenever necessary and that time had come.  We moved our operation to the current location at 115 E. Chicago Blvd. by sharing space with another business, Burdick Kitchen & Bath. We currently have a location in Tecumseh and Adrian.

Great Ideas has been fortunate enough to do draperies and interior design in 22 states and 4 countries.  Our work has been featured in Better Homes and Garden magazine as well as many local publications.  Some of our clients have moved out of a state but still want Great Ideas to do all their interior design and draperies.  We have been very blessed over our 29 years in business to have such loyal clients.
